Bronchitis? No way. It’s still summer!
But, the truth is, even during the hot Chattanooga summer, there are still cases of bronchitis that pop up. That’s why it’s important to recognize the symptoms and seek medical care promptly to help get you back to good health.
What Is Bronchitis?
More than 3 million cases of bronchitis are diagnosed every year in the United States. Bronchitis occurs when there is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs.
Once the infection goes into the lungs, then you have a risk of suffering from not only bronchitis but pneumonia, too! Therefore, it’s important to seek medical attention at our urgent care center sooner rather than later.
Symptoms of Bronchitis
- Chest pressure
- Chronic or dry cough
- Difficulty sleeping
- Post-nasal drip
- Runny nose
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
How Long Does Bronchitis Last?
Acute bronchitis starts approximately three to four days after a cold or flu begins. While most cases of acute bronchitis last between two and three weeks, the cough that accompanies bronchitis may take a bit longer to disappear.
If you’re diagnosed with bacterial bronchitis, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic, but there are other steps you can take to treat the condition:
- Avoid smoke and other irritants.
- Try a cold-air face mask to help with breathing.
- Use OTC cough medications or lozenges.
- Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.
